3 Months Before Start (Around June)

1. Finalize Course Registration

  • Complete Course Registration: If you haven’t registered for courses yet, do so now to secure your place in classes.
  • Check for Prerequisites: Make sure you meet any prerequisites for the courses you plan to take.

2. Plan Campus Transportation

  • Explore Public Transport: If you don’t have a car, look into the public transit options in Kamloops. TRU is well-connected by bus.
  • Campus Parking: If you’re bringing a car, check parking options at TRU. It’s important to get a permit if needed.

3. Buy Supplies

  • School Supplies: Purchase any required supplies, such as a laptop, stationery, backpacks, and any tech gear for online courses or studying.
  • Dorm Supplies: If you’re living in residence, check the TRU website for a list of recommended dorm supplies. Essentials may include bedding, kitchenware, and toiletries.

2 Months Before Start (Around July)

1. Complete Any Last-Minute Forms

  • Health & Wellness: Complete any necessary health forms for TRU, including student health plans if applicable.
  • Student ID & TRU Card: Make sure you have a TRU student card or know how to obtain it when you arrive.

2. Final Housing Preparations

  • Confirm Move-In: Confirm your move-in date and ensure you have all the necessary documents or keys.
  • Packing: Begin packing your belongings. Consider the climate in Kamloops; summers can be hot, and winters can be cold, so bring appropriate clothing.

3. Prepare Mentally for the Transition

  • Adjust Your Expectations: The transition to university can be challenging. Try to mentally prepare by reading about student life, time management, and stress reduction strategies.
  • Connect with Roommates: If you’re living with others, get in touch to discuss shared responsibilities and expectations.

1 Month Before Start (Around August)

1. Arrive Early

  • Move-in: If you’re living on-campus, arrive early for orientation, or if you’re moving off-campus, try to settle in a bit early to adjust to your new environment.

2. Orientation

  • Student Orientation: Attend TRU’s official orientation events to familiarize yourself with the campus, meet other students, and get important information on services and activities available to you.
  • Meet Professors and Advisors: Attend any meet-and-greet events for your program to get to know your instructors and academic advisors.

3. Final Preparation

  • Register for Health Insurance: If you haven’t already, finalize your health coverage details.
  • Finalize Your Schedule: Double-check that your classes are all set and finalize any last-minute course changes.

Start of the Semester (Early September)

1. Attend Classes

  • Get to Class Early: On the first day of class, make sure to arrive a little early to familiarize yourself with the classroom.
  • Meet Classmates: Introduce yourself to people in your classes; it’s always helpful to make friends early.

2. Engage in Campus Life

  • Join Clubs & Activities: TRU has a vibrant student life with clubs, societies, and activities. Get involved to make the most of your university experience.
  • Campus Resources: Take advantage of academic support, such as tutoring, writing centers, or counseling services.
