Whether this is your first ever semester at TRU or your first winter semester preparing yourself for the changes is important to your success. Navigating the cold weather, new routines, and academic workload may seem like a challenge at first but there are many resources available for you to make this shift easier. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast Kamloops is a great place for you if you like skiing, snowboarding, skating, or snowshoeing.

Dress for Success (and Warmth)

Layering up is the best way to stay warm while walking to and from classes. A good winter jacket is an essential in the winter weather as well as boots in case it snows. You don’t have to buy these brand new ones especially on a university student budget and you can find great options at the thrift stores. Gloves, hats, and scarves can be found at many stores for relatively cheap and are a great addition to your winter wardrobe.

Packing Tips

Whether you live on or off campus preparing for winter temperatures in your living space is something to consider. Packing extra blankets and sweaters to use around the house can keep you warm without having to turn up the heat. Bringing a personal space heater is another easy solution to staying warm, just ensure there is an auto off setting if you’re living in the dorms.

Campus Transportation

Make sure you’re familiar with the layout of campus so you can use the pathways to get around in case it’s snowed. The main pathways are typically cleared first so those are the best routes to go to class. If you drive to campus it’s best to leave a bit earlier than you usually would to ensure you have time to drive to the road conditions. The campus usually doesn’t close unless the winter weather conditions are bad so being prepared is the best thing to do for your safety.

Create a Productive Indoor Study Space

Getting a desk lamp is a good room essential in the winter since it gets darker earlier. Finding a good tea can make your space feel cozier while keeping your warm as well. Since the days get shorter in the winter, making a cozy study space can help keep you productive and warm in the winter. The TRU campus also has lots of good study spaces in almost every building so taking advantage of those can help you.

Stay Healthy and Active

Indoor workouts like the gym or fitness classes can help you stay active and warm! The Tournament Capital Centre offers a discount for students as well as free access to the pool and the track so it’s a great thing to take advantage of as a student. There are also free fitness classes hosted by TRU Recreation Monday through Friday in the on campus gym. Keeping up with your vitamins and supplements is another way to stay healthy throughout the winter and lower your risk of getting sick.

Winter Activities in Kamloops

Many of the activities on campus in the winter semester are indoors which gives you a nice break from the cold. TRUSU hosts community meals where students can get free food and meet new people and many clubs put on different events for students. While the winter semester may be more quiet there’s lots of outdoor activities to do around Kamloops like skating, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
