How do I make friends in university?
Making friends in university may seem daunting at first but there’s so many ways to make friends. TRU has over 80 different clubs you can join to find like-minded people with similar interests to you. The clubs range from academic to religious to hobby and much more! Another way to make friends is by talking to people in class. Finding a person to study with or work on homework with can lead to a new friend. Making friends in the workplace is another good opportunity whether you are working on or off campus.
How can I stay safe on campus?
TRU has on campus security you can reach by phone or the emergency poles around campus just by pressing a button. If you don’t want to walk around campus alone a good thing to do is find a friend to walk with you. Staying alert on campus of cars and using only the crosswalks to cross the roads is the best way to stay safe from vehicles. TRU has lots of wildlife on campus like the family of deer that like to wander around. If you see the deer, it’s best to admire from afar, they are used to being around people, but they are still wild animals.
How do I manage my time effectively?
Finding a planning method that works for you is the best thing to do to stay on top of assignments and tests. Some people prefer a physical planner that you can find at many different stores while others prefer a digital planner. There are many planner apps out there, but my personal favourite is Google Calendar with the tasks feature. It is an adjustment especially coming from highschool where you go all day to having different classes everyday so make sure to check mytru for your class schedule.
How do I create a budget and manage my finances as a student?
The TRU finance office is a great service to take advantage of for scholarships and awards as well as student loans. There is also a cost estimator calculator available on the website to see a projection for how much your education will approximately be. There are also jobs on campus students can apply for to make some extra money while being a student as well as the coop program for full time employment.
What should I do if I feel overwhelmed or unsure about my major?
You don’t need to declare your major right away just before you reach 60 credits. If you are unsure about what to major in, you can take courses to figure out your interests. You can check out the different program websites to see what options are available to major and minor in.
