TRU has been actively integrating green initiatives across its campus operations and academic offerings. These efforts align with both its commitment to environmental stewardship and its goal to create a sustainable and resilient future for students, staff, and the community. Listed below are the steps TRU has taken to reduce their carbon footprint and be named a global leader in sustainability!

Renewable Energy

TRU has undertaken various energy-efficient upgrades to reduce its carbon footprint, including the installation of LED lighting and energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The university is also exploring the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and solar sidewalks, one of which can be found just outside the Future Students Office!

Waste Reduction and Recycling

The Zero Waste Stations are an essential part of TRU’s efforts to minimize waste generation and improve waste diversion on campus. These stations, strategically placed throughout the university’s buildings, aim to make waste disposal easier for students, staff, and faculty. The concept behind the zero-waste approach is to reduce the volume of material that ends up in landfills by encouraging proper recycling and composting.

Building Design

TRU has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, particularly through its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings, including the Brown Family House of Learning. The building was constructed using recycled and reclaimed materials and maximizes natural light. If you’re visiting TRU, be sure to check out HOL 190 – the largest lecture hall on campus! Its well thought-out design reflects a traditional indigenous pit home, with the roof being made from exactly 495 pine beetle ponderosas.

Sustainability Office

The TRU Sustainability Office serves as the hub for all sustainability-related initiatives on campus, working to integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability into both university operations and academic programs. Through the work of the Sustainability Office, TRU has made significant strides in creating a greener campus and fostering a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the campus environment and into the community.

Academic Programs and Research

TRU offers several academic programs focused on sustainability, including a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Bachelor of Natural Resource Science, and various interdisciplinary sustainability courses. These programs equip students with the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges. Furthermore, TRU researchers are involved in projects related to climate change, sustainable agriculture, clean energy, water management, and community-based environmental solutions.

TRU’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in both its operational practices and academic offerings. The university strives to be a leader in environmental stewardship, integrating sustainability into every facet of its operations, from energy efficiency to community engagement. Through ongoing green initiatives, research, and student involvement, TRU is working to create a more sustainable future for its campus and the broader community.
