Life as a student sometimes can get challenging. It’s easy enough to just want to stay in your dorm after a long day of classes. One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Thompson Rivers University has been diving into extracurricular activities. While academics are the foundation of any university experience, it’s the clubs and organizations at TRU that have truly enriched my journey, helping me grow both personally and professionally.
Before joining TRU, I wasn’t sure how to balance academics with extracurriculars. But once I started exploring the many clubs on campus, I quickly realized how essential these activities are to my growth. Whether it’s cultural clubs, academic societies, or recreational groups, TRUSU’s wide variety of options has allowed me to pursue my passions while discovering new ones along the way.
The amazing thing about clubs at TRU is that you are in control of your involvement. This mean that it’s fine if you wanna simply attend club events but if you wanted to you could serve in club leadership or even start your own club. During my first year at TRU I attended a lot of the events hosted by the TRUSU Computer Science Club. I later joined the club board as a Student Representative and Social Media Coordinator. I went on to creating the OuiSpeak French Club and becoming the Co-President of the Afro-Caribbean Students Association.
Getting involved in clubs has provided me with more than just social connections. It’s given me opportunities to develop leadership and organizational skills that I never imagined I’d use. Whether planning events, coordinating meetings, or managing projects, I’ve gained hands-on experience that translates directly to both my academic work and future career. The lessons I’ve learned outside the classroom are as valuable as those inside.
The friendships I’ve made through extracurricular activities are some of the most meaningful connections I’ve formed at TRU. Meeting like-minded students who share similar passions has created a strong support system for me, both socially and academically. These networks often extend beyond university life, offering valuable connections that may benefit me in my future career.
Employers are looking for more than just good grades—they want well-rounded individuals who can work in teams, take initiative, and lead. The experiences I’ve gained through clubs and organizations have significantly enhanced my resume, giving me a competitive edge in the job market. From managing budgets to organizing large-scale events, the skills I’ve acquired go far beyond traditional classroom learning.
One of the most fulfilling parts of joining clubs at TRU has been the chance to engage with the broader Kamloops community. Many organizations are focused on volunteer work, giving back to the community through service projects or awareness campaigns. This has not only been rewarding but has also helped me better understand the impact I can have as a student leader.
While it can be challenging to juggle academics with extracurricular activities, I’ve learned that it’s all about balance. Time management has become one of my strongest skills, ensuring that I stay on top of my studies while also dedicating time to the clubs and organizations that mean the most to me. And the great thing is, many clubs are flexible and understand the demands of being a student, making it easier to stay involved without feeling overwhelmed.
TRU’s extracurricular scene offers something for everyone, and whether you’re looking to pursue a hobby, build leadership skills, or simply make new friends, there’s a club or organization that will resonate with you. My involvement in these activities has been a defining part of my TRU experience, shaping me into a more confident, capable, and connected individual.
Getting involved in extracurricular activities at TRU is more than just a way to pass the time—it’s a powerful tool for personal growth, professional development, and making the most of the university experience. I encourage you to explore the options. You never know what you might discover about yourself along the way.
